Navigating the EU student visa process may seem daunting, especially with changes post-Brexit. This guide provides an overview of how EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals can apply for a student visa to study in the UK.

The Post-Brexit Shift

Since 31st December 2020, EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens must obtain a student visa to study in the UK. Those already in the UK before 1st January 2021 were able to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. However, new international students coming to the UK now need a student visa.

Simplified Digital Visa Application

The process of applying for an EU student visa has been streamlined, with applications now fully accessible online through the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app. If you possess a biometric passport, you can complete the entire student visa application digitally without needing to visit a Visa Application Centre. Once your visa is approved, you will receive an email confirmation and can use the ‘View and Prove’ service to share your immigration status with universities.

Tuition Fees and Employment Options

There’s no change in fees for EU students, as tuition rates remain aligned with those for UK and international students. Moreover, a student visa allows you to work 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks. After completing your degree, the Graduate Route visa enables you to stay in the UK for up to two years to explore career opportunities.

Key Application Dates

You can apply for your EU student visa up to three months before your course starts. To do so, you'll need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number, provided once your offer is upgraded to unconditional. To ensure ample time for processing, it’s advised to apply for your student visa by the end of April, ahead of the September intake. By following these steps, you can navigate the EU student visa process with ease and set the stage for an exciting academic journey in the UK!
