Applications for UK Work and Study Visas Plummet by Over a Third

Significant Drop in Visa Applications

The number of international workers and students applying for visas to the UK has dropped sharply following new restrictions introduced by the previous government. Applications for skilled worker, health and care, and study visas fell by more than 33% in July, reaching just 91,300 compared to the previous year.

Health and Care Visa Applications Hit Hardest

The most drastic decrease was seen in health and care visa applications, which plummeted by 82% to 2,900 in July. Applications for study visas also saw a notable decline, dropping 15% to 69,500.

Impact on Overall Immigration Figures

These figures suggest a substantial reduction in overall immigration is likely. Net migration hit a record high of 764,000 in 2022 and remained elevated at 685,000 last year.

Government Restrictions and Labour's Position

Under Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government, restrictions were placed on family members of those coming to study or work in health and care sectors. The Labour Party, now in power, has indicated no plans to alter these policies. Initial July data shows a 15% decrease in sponsored student visa applications, reflecting the ongoing trend of reduced immigration.

Future Projections and Potential Issues

The University of Oxford’s Migration Observatory projects that net migration could decline significantly to around 350,000 by 2030. This is attributed to increased departures from Britain, fewer international students, and a decrease in private sector job vacancies. The think tank warns that this decline may lead to challenges for universities facing reduced revenue and potential recruitment issues in the health and social care sectors.

Policy Changes and Future Plans

In March, then-Home Secretary James Cleverly imposed a ban on care workers bringing family members to the UK and tightened visa sponsorship rules. The Labour government has proposed new legislation to improve conditions and pay in the social care sector. Earlier this year, the Conservatives also restricted family members of international students unless they were on postgraduate research courses. A Home Office spokesperson emphasised the government’s commitment to reducing high levels of legal migration by addressing the underlying causes and ensuring a fair and controlled immigration system that benefits the UK while supporting domestic workforce development.
