Australia Introduces One-Year Work and Holiday Visa for Indian Citizens

Australia has launched a new one-year Work and Holiday visa for Indian citizens as part of its Working Holiday Maker program. This initiative opens the door for up to 1,000 eligible Indian applicants to travel to Australia for an enriching experience, combining work, study, and leisure. The visa allows Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 to undertake short-term employment for up to three months, study for up to four months, and enjoy an extended stay through a second Work and Holiday visa if eligible. Australian Assistant Minister for Immigration, Matt Thistlethwaite, introduced the program during a launch event at Blue Tokai in Delhi’s Khan Market on Monday. The initiative is part of the broader Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, aimed at strengthening the ties between the two nations. “We are very proud to launch the Working Holiday Maker Visa for young Indians, giving them a unique chance to experience Australian culture and lifestyle firsthand,” Thistlethwaite remarked during the event. The visa offers flexibility for young Indians to explore Australia's diverse culture and landscape while supporting their travels through short-term employment. “This program not only allows Indians to visit Australia but gives them the opportunity to immerse themselves in our society, contributing to our growing multicultural community,” Thistlethwaite added. He also emphasised that participants could return to Australia on student or other work visas once they’ve completed their initial year. India officially became the 50th country to join the Working Holiday Maker visa program on September 16, and the response has been overwhelming, with over 40,000 applications already received. This visa is a part of Australia’s effort to foster stronger ties with India, particularly by encouraging cultural exchange and economic cooperation. From October 1, 2024, eligible Indian passport holders can participate in the pre-application process by registering online. The application process involves a ballot system, where applicants will be randomly selected for the visa. The registration period will remain open until October 31, 2024, and selections will continue from October 14, 2024, through April 30, 2025. Those selected will receive notifications via email, inviting them to submit a formal visa application. “There are no restrictions on the type of work participants can do,” Thistlethwaite noted, pointing out that many are likely to find jobs in the hospitality industry, although opportunities exist in other sectors. “The visa offers great flexibility, allowing participants to work in any field, which is ideal for those looking to fund their travels or gain international work experience.” The introduction of this visa program further solidifies the growing connection between Australia and India. As Thistlethwaite explained, “Nearly a million Australian citizens have Indian heritage, making the Indian community one of the fastest-growing in our country.
