India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, announced this development following his recent three-day visit to Australia, where discussions focused on enhancing mobility and fostering closer ties between the two countries. Goyal expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "During my visit, I was pleased to learn that the Work and Holiday visa, a key commitment under the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, will be operational from 1st October 2024. This will facilitate mobility and deepen people-to-people connections, enhancing our relationship further."
Work and Holiday Visa Details
The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) provides Indian nationals aged 18 to 30 the opportunity to live and work in Australia for a period of up to 12 months. This visa allows recipients to engage in various activities, including work, study, and travel throughout their stay. According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, visa holders can study for up to four months and enjoy the flexibility of leaving and re-entering Australia multiple times during their visa duration. The cost associated with obtaining this visa is AUD 650, which is approximately INR 36,748.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Work and Holiday visa, Indian citizens must fulfil the following criteria:
Age Requirement: Applicants must be under 30 years of age at the time of application.
Valid Documentation: They must hold a valid Indian passport and a national identity card, such as a PAN card.
Email Address: A valid email address is required for communication and notifications.
Registration Fee: A registration fee of AUD 25 (approximately INR 1,500) is necessary to complete the application process.
ImmiAccount: Prospective applicants must create an ImmiAccount, an online portal used for visa applications and related processes.
Ballot System for Visa Selection
The selection process for the Work and Holiday visa will operate under a ballot system designed to ensure fairness and equal opportunity among applicants. According to Immigration Australia, there will be an annual ballot process for each participating country within the program year. This system allows for a random selection of applicants, promoting equitable access to the limited number of visas available.
Eligible applicants can register for the ballot by completing a 'Visa pre-application registration' form under 'New application' in their ImmiAccount starting from October 1, 2024. This step is crucial for those looking to secure a spot in the highly sought-after visa program.
What Happens After Registration?
Once an applicant completes their registration, they will receive an acknowledgment email confirming the status of their application. In their ImmiAccount, the registration status will be updated to "received." If selected in the ballot, applicants will receive a 'Notification of Selection' letter via email, inviting them to apply for the Work and Holiday visa online through their ImmiAccount. The letter will outline the specific timeframe within which the application must be submitted. It is essential to note that receiving a notification does not guarantee visa approval, as applicants must still meet all eligibility criteria outlined by the Australian government.
For those whose registrations are not selected, they will be unable to apply for the Work and Holiday visa during that particular program year. However, registrations will remain valid until April 30, 2025, or until the applicant turns 31, whichever comes first. Those who missed this year’s ballot and continue to meet the eligibility requirements may have the opportunity to register for the following year’s ballot.
Application Timeline
For successful applicants, the timeline is structured as follows: if selected in the ballot, individuals will have 28 calendar days to submit their complete application for the Work and Holiday visa.
