Study Permit Regulations Tightened

In July 2024, Canada implemented stricter rules for foreign students to prevent the misuse of study permits. Under these new regulations, students are required to reapply for a study permit whenever they change schools and must obtain the permit before starting their new program. This move aims to ensure better monitoring of students' enrollment and compliance with visa conditions.

Extended Work Visas for Israeli Nationals

Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Canada extended its work visa options for Israeli nationals until July 31, 2025. Initially introduced in February 2024, this initiative allowed Israelis to apply for work visas, which were originally set to expire in June but have now been extended for an additional year.

End of Flagpoling for Post-Graduation Work Permits

As of June 2024, Canada has ended the practice of "flagpoling" for Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs). This change, announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller, means that foreign nationals can no longer apply for a PGWP at the Canadian border, a method previously used to bypass standard processing times.

Permanent Residency for Caregivers Upon Arrival

Canada has introduced two new pilot programs that offer foreign caregivers the opportunity to obtain permanent residency immediately upon their arrival in the country. These initiatives streamline the process for caregivers to secure employment and gain residency status, making it easier for them to settle in Canada.

Super Visas for Parents and Grandparents

The Canadian government has begun issuing Super Visa invitations to approximately 35,700 sponsors who applied as early as 2020. This visa allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their parents and grandparents to live in Canada, with the program’s invitations being distributed since May 2024.

Reduced Wait Times for Entrepreneur Visas

In an effort to support innovative entrepreneurs, Canada has enhanced its Start-Up Visa Program, effective from April 30, 2024. The changes aim to reduce processing times and address the application backlog, making it easier for start-ups and self-employed individuals to immigrate to Canada.

Increased Work Hours for International Students

Starting in September 2024, international students in Canada will be allowed to work off-campus for up to 24 hours per week, an increase from the previous 20-hour limit. This change is part of Canada’s broader efforts to address labour shortages and support the economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.
