Stricter citizenship and residency requirements

Under her proposal, the present five-year qualifying term for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) would be raised to ten years, and low-wage foreign workers and unemployed people would not be allowed to seek permanent residency. A household applying for ILR must demonstrate that they are "net contributors" to the economy, which means they must meet a higher earnings threshold. Applicants for ILR must not have used social housing or claimed social benefits during this time. Anyone with a criminal record would not be eligible for permanent residency. "Our country is not a dormitory, it's our home," Badenoch stated when outlining her position.
