The goal of the action is to promote both business and pleasure travel while lowering administrative barriers. However, this visa exemption does not apply to India."This will provide a more seamless and comfortable arrival experience by reducing traffic at our borders and saving precious time. Travelers may now apply for their visas online before leaving, eliminating the need to stand in long lines at ports of entry, said Dr. Albert Kawana, Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, on Monday.
Why are Indians not eligible for visa relaxation?
According to Kawana, the visa regime is founded on the reciprocity principle. "Namibia remains open to engaging with nations that are willing to establish reciprocal visa agreements, promoting stronger diplomatic and economic ties," he said. The application process for countries that do not qualify for visas on arrival is unchanged; travelers must apply in advance via the Ministry's online platform and wait for approval before entering Namibia. In 2023, Namibia saw a sharp increase in international tourist arrivals, rising from 461,027 in 2022 to 863,872. The top ten tourist markets were South Africa, Angola, Germany, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands.Indian tourists continue to overlook Namibia's stunning landscapes and distinctive experiences for a variety of reasons. Faced with these restrictions, it’s unsurprising that many Indian tourists choose for more known and budget-friendly places instead,” said Mohak Nahta, founder and CEO of Atlys, speaking to Business Standard.Geographically close to Namibia, South Africa relaxed visa requirements for visitors from China and India in 2024 to draw tourists from the two most populous countries in the world, who had been put off by bureaucratic red tape. In 2019, over 95,000 Indian tourists traveled to South Africa; by 2023, that number had risen to over 79,700, a 43% increase; and between January and September 2024, over 57,900 Indian tourists visited South Africa. According to online travel booking portal Tripadvisor, Namibia is renowned for a number of things, from its distinctive landscapes to its rich cultural heritage.
