Germany has issued 80,000 work visas in the first half of 2024, primarily to attract skilled workers amid ongoing labour shortages. According to a recent report by Schengen News, these visas were granted between January and June 2024, as confirmed by the Federal Foreign Office to the German Press Agency.
Labour Shortages Impacting the Economy
The German Economic Institute (IW) highlighted in its analysis that Germany is experiencing a significant workforce shortage, with 570,000 positions remaining unfilled in 2023. This shortage is particularly acute in sectors such as transportation, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, engineering, and information technology, impacting the country's economic performance.
Increase in Skilled Worker Visas
Of the work visas issued, 40,000 were specifically for skilled workers, representing an increase of 3,000 compared to the same period in 2023. This rise in visa issuance is closely linked to the country’s need to address its labour shortfalls, especially in specialised fields.
Future Challenges and Predictions
A study by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) predicts that the labour shortages in Germany will likely worsen in the coming years. German Labour Minister Hubertus Heil has stated that the country will need an additional seven million workers by 2035 to meet demand.
Strategies to Attract Skilled Labor
In response to these challenges, Germany is set to introduce the Indian Skilled Worker strategy during German-Indian government consultations this autumn. The country has also relaxed its immigration policies to attract more skilled labour, as reported by Schengen News.
