Germany has significantly reduced the processing time for long-term work visas for Indian skilled workers, cutting it down from nine months to just two weeks. This move, reported by Schengen News, is part of Germany's broader strategy to address critical labour shortages and boost its economy. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted the urgent need for skilled workers, emphasising the importance of reducing wait times for visa applicants from India. "In India, in Delhi, we have thus been able to reduce waiting times for national visas to two weeks. That used to take nine months," Baerbock stated.
Labour Shortages Impacting Economy
The reduction in visa processing time comes in response to Germany's pressing labour shortages. In 2023, the country faced around 570,000 unfilled job vacancies, according to the German Economic Institute (IW). These shortages are not just affecting everyday businesses; they are also delaying training programs and conferences due to the prolonged visa process. Indian companies invested in Germany have been particularly reliant on faster visa issuance to bring specialists into the country.
The IW has warned that the lost production potential from these unfilled jobs could reach €74 billion by 2027. To combat this, Germany granted 80,000 employment-related visas between January and June 2024, with skilled workers making up 50% of these visas. This represents a 3,000-visa increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Visa Acceleration Action Plan
Germany's Foreign Ministry had previously launched a 'Visa Acceleration Action Plan' in 2023, aimed at speeding up the visa process. However, the IW expressed concerns that the plan might not yield the best results, potentially causing an economic loss of €49 billion.
Strengthening India-Germany Relations
Amid these developments, India-Germany relations continue to strengthen. On August 14, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with German MPs Jurgen Hardt and Ralph Brinkhaus in Delhi, where they discussed the growth of bilateral ties and regional developments. Additionally, on August 13, the German Air Force conducted its first joint exercise with the Indian Air Force, further cementing military cooperation between the two nations.
These initiatives, coupled with the streamlined visa process, reflect Germany's commitment to fostering closer ties with India while addressing its own economic challenges through skilled migration.
