Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has declared that the H1B visa issue is now "a thing of the past," marking a shift in international dialogues towards broader economic and strategic partnerships. Speaking at Vanijya Bhavan in New Delhi, Goyal emphasised that the H1B visa, which has long been a topic of debate, would no longer dominate discussions in India’s international engagements. Goyal's statement comes after his recent visit to the United States, where he held key meetings with CEOs of major companies. The focus of these discussions was the series of reforms introduced by the Modi government aimed at boosting foreign investments in India, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals and diamonds. During his two-day stay in New York, Goyal highlighted Surat, a major hub for the diamond industry, as a region ripe for foreign investment. He met with around 30 business leaders, many of whom already have ventures in India, showcasing sustained interest in expanding operations in the country. Following his engagements in New York, Goyal travelled to Washington, where he attended a luncheon meeting with 17 CEOs from the CEO Forum, including senior executives from Tata Sons. Discussions focused on restructuring the forum, as the terms of several members are set to expire in December. The visit also resulted in the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), underscoring a deepening commitment to enhancing business ties between India and the US. In addition to meeting business leaders, Goyal engaged with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), think tanks, educational institutions, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He characterised this visit as different from previous ones, noting the absence of "negative agendas" and a more optimistic outlook on Indo-US relations. The conversations extended beyond traditional sectors, exploring new avenues for collaboration in areas like clean energy development, technology transfer, digital telecommunications, and defence. Goyal also mentioned ongoing discussions around biosciences, although he noted limited progress on biofuels due to the upcoming US elections. One of the key topics during the visit was the potential for establishing a stable exchange rate between the Indian rupee and the US dollar, a move that could significantly benefit bilateral trade. Tourism and the development of the digital economy were also highlighted during his interactions, further positioning India as a growing destination for global investment. Minister Goyal’s engagements at the CEO Forum and with other key stakeholders aimed to showcase India’s evolving business landscape, emphasising ongoing economic reforms that make the country an increasingly attractive destination for international investors.
