India Introduces Visa-on-Arrival for Tourists from Japan, South Korea, and UAE

Streamlined Entry for Travellers to Boost Tourism

In a major boost for international travel, India has introduced a visa-on-arrival facility for citizens of Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Announced by the Ministry of Tourism, this new initiative is designed to make travel easier for tourists, business professionals, medical visitors, and conference attendees from these nations.

Details of the Visa-on-Arrival Facility

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, confirmed in a recent Lok Sabha update that the visa-on-arrival service is now available at six major Indian airports: Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. This visa is valid for up to 60 days and permits double entry, offering increased flexibility for visitors.

Part of a Broader Tourism Strategy

This visa-on-arrival service is a key component of India’s broader strategy to enhance its tourism sector and simplify the travel process for international visitors. Along with this, the Ministry of Tourism has also expanded its e-visa program to include Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for citizens from 167 countries. The e-visa allows entry through 30 international airports and six seaports, further easing access for global travellers.

Commitment to Improving Tourism Infrastructure

The Ministry of Tourism is dedicated to improving the overall tourism experience in India. It conducts surveys, research, and feasibility studies to guide policy decisions and assess the effectiveness of existing programs. These efforts ensure that tourism policies are targeted and effective.

Tourist Safety and Support

To enhance tourist safety, 15 state governments and Union Territories have established tourist police units. Additionally, a 24/7 Multilingual Tourist Info-Helpline is available at toll-free number 1800111363 or short code 1363, offering assistance in 12 languages, including 10 international ones, to both domestic and international visitors.

Infrastructure Development Initiatives

India has also launched the Swadesh Darshan scheme, which focuses on developing tourism infrastructure across the country. Since its launch in 2014-15, the scheme has funded 76 projects with a total investment of INR 5,287 crore. The updated Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0) now emphasises sustainable and responsible tourism with a tourist-centric approach. In addition, the National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) has been introduced to develop pilgrimage destinations. So far, INR 1,621.14 crore has been sanctioned under this initiative, with INR 1,024.18 crore already disbursed. These initiatives underscore India’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience and promoting sustainable tourism, making the country an increasingly appealing destination for global travellers.
