As students gear up to choose the right college to fulfil their American Dream, an Indian-origin software developer with over two decades of experience is sounding the alarm. The seasoned professional, who is a vocal critic of U.S. immigration policies, issued a stark warning on social media, cautioning aspiring students about the harsh realities they might face after pursuing education in the United States.
"Please don't come to the USA. These are lies," he wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "Talk to anyone who came here to study in the last decade. Your dreams will be shattered. There is no future after your education is over. Your entire career will be spent chasing H-1B visas. For Indian-born applicants, the Green Card wait time is about 100 years," he added, highlighting the severe backlog in the U.S. immigration system.
His warning comes in response to a recent message from U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti, who encouraged Indian students and their parents to attend upcoming EducationUSA Fairs across India. The fairs are designed to help students learn about admissions, scholarships, and other opportunities at over 80 U.S. universities.
The expat’s warning struck a chord with many in the Indian immigrant community, who have become increasingly disillusioned with the U.S. immigration process. One user replied, "I agree! I moved to the United States 21 years ago, but things were different then. Now, it's India's time, and smart people will succeed here rather than in the USA. The Green Card wait is miserable! Not worth it unless you’re just going there for the reasons mentioned. Immigration is a bigger pain point now more than ever, especially for 'legal immigrants.'"
Another commenter added, "And don't come to Canada either. You might get citizenship, but it's now totally unaffordable, and there are lots of people without jobs. We all know the law and order situation."
The Allure of U.S. Education and the H-1B Visa Trap
For many Indian students, studying in the U.S. has long been seen as a gateway to a better life, offering world-class education and the prospect of a high-paying job. However, as the expat pointed out, the reality can be much more complicated and challenging. After graduation, many students are thrust into the competitive and often frustrating process of securing an H-1B visa, which allows foreign nationals to work in specialty occupations in the U.S.
The H-1B visa process is highly competitive, with far more applicants than available visas. Even those who successfully obtain an H-1B visa often find their careers and lives constrained by the conditions attached to it, such as limited job mobility and the ever-present threat of visa expiration if their employment status changes.

Perhaps the most daunting challenge for Indian nationals is the Green Card backlog. Under current U.S. immigration laws, Green Cards are capped at 7% per country, regardless of the population or number of applicants from that country. This has resulted in wait times of up to 100 years for Indian-born applicants, as highlighted by the expat.
This backlog leaves many skilled professionals and their families in a state of perpetual uncertainty. Despite living and working in the U.S. for years—sometimes even decades—they are unable to secure permanent residency. This situation not only hampers their professional growth but also has significant personal consequences, as they often find themselves unable to buy homes, invest in businesses, or fully integrate into American society.
