Indians continue to top the list as the largest group of international students enrolled in UK universities, comprising 26% of non-EU students during the 2022-23 academic year, according to data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). This increase is largely attributed to the Graduate Route visa, which allows graduates to remain in the UK for two years to work or seek employment.
Impact of the Graduate Route Visa
Despite a broader decline in migration to the UK due to stricter visa regulations, Indian students have maintained their lead, surpassing those from other countries. The latest HESA data, released on Thursday, highlights that India sent more students to the UK than any other overseas nation during 2022-23. Over the past five years, the number of Indian students in the UK has surged by 145,650, a trend that Universities UK International (UUKi) credits to the opportunities provided by the Graduate Route visa, which has also received support from the new Labour government."We were pleased to hear UK’s Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, reaffirm the country's commitment to the Graduate Route visa and extend a warm welcome to international students," UUKi said in a statement.
Concerns Over Recent Anti-Immigrant Protests
There are concerns that recent anti-immigrant protests across the UK may negatively impact these statistics, particularly since Indian students overtook Chinese students as the largest nationality receiving UK student visas back in 2022. However, UUKi expressed optimism about the public support against racism and xenophobia, hoping it will reassure current and prospective international students that the UK values diversity.
Decline in Overall Visa Applications
The latest Home Office data, also released this week, reveals a significant drop in visa applications from students and skilled workers, a trend that has accelerated since the government implemented restrictions on family dependents. The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, currently touring India, cautioned against being misled by the two-year-old HESA figures, stressing the need to fully resolve the uncertainties caused by the review of the Graduate Route visa.Home Office figures indicate a 35% drop in visa applications, with 187,900 fewer applications across key visa routes in the first seven months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. Student visa applications fell by 16% or 30,300, and related dependent visa applications decreased by 81% or 55,000 during this period. The Health and Care visa route saw the sharpest decline, with dependent applications dropping by 71% or 53,100 in the first four months since restrictions were imposed.
Government’s Stance on Immigration
A spokesperson for the UK Home Office reiterated the government's stance on immigration, emphasising the need for a controlled and fair system that addresses skill shortages by focusing on training the domestic workforce. These immigration restrictions, introduced by the previous Conservative government and supported by the new Labour government, include tighter rules on overseas students bringing family members and higher salary thresholds for skilled worker visas.
