According to study by Robert McNeil, a researcher at the University of Oxford's Centre on Migration, Policy, and Society, foreign workers who may apply for UK skilled worker visas include dog beauticians, DJs, and pilates teachers. A lot of skilled worker visas were granted between 2021 and March 2024 for "animal care service occupations," such as kennel workers, veterinary nursing assistants, dog walkers, and groomers. 167 visas were issued to instructors of fitness and wellness, including lifestyle coaches and instructors of yoga and pilates, over the same time period. The list also includes positions such as air travel helpers, which encompass cabin crew and luggage handling personnel, and costume interpreters, who welcome guests at historical sites and museums while costumed in period attire.McNeil explains that post-Brexit policy changes are to blame for the diverse range of occupations on the skilled worker visa list. "Professions like engineering technicians, plumbers, and bricklayers immediately come to mind when people think of middle-skilled occupations. However, it is difficult to define what is truly middle-skilled. "Some of the findings are unexpected," he continued. Cycling instructors, homoeopaths, and cemetery administrators are also on the "middle-skilled" list.With migration reaching a record 906,000 in 2023, the government has been under increasing pressure to solve the issue. Ministers have pledged to lower total numbers and tighten visa regulations. In response to political pressure from Nigel Farage's Reform UK party, Labour leader Keir Starmer has criticized the Conservative administration for carrying out an "open borders experiment" and is initiating an immigration policy initiative.In its next white paper, Labour will suggest ways to decrease legal immigration while maintaining visa pathways for highly qualified professionals in industries like artificial intelligence and the biological sciences. "We are going to look again at routes for the highest skilled people, particularly in AI and life sciences," stated Chancellor Rachel Reeves recently. Although the list of qualifying jobs is extensive, Home Office sources said that in order to get a visa, an applicant must be sponsored by their employer and earn at least £38,700 (Rs 41.94 lakhs), or less for those under 26 or working in specific higher education positions.
