International Students to Face Increased Financial Requirements for UK Visas in 2025

The UK government has announced that starting January 2, 2025, international students will need to demonstrate higher financial savings to obtain a student visa. This adjustment reflects the rising cost of living in the UK and marks the first change in financial requirements since 2020.
New Financial Requirements
Under the updated regulations, international students must show they have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses for the duration of their course, up to nine months. The specific financial thresholds vary based on the location of study:For students studying in London: GBP 1,483 per monthFor students studying outside London: GBP 1,136 per monthPreviously, these amounts were GBP 1,334 for London and GBP 1,023 for other regions. Consequently, for students planning to study in London for nine months or longer, the total required amount will now be GBP 13,348.
Flexibility in Requirements
The UK government allows some flexibility regarding the financial requirements:Accommodation Deposits: Students who have already paid a deposit for their accommodation can deduct this amount from the total funds they need to demonstrate.Exemptions for Long-Term Residents: Students who have resided in the UK on another visa for at least 12 months are exempt from showing proof of maintenance funds.In addition to the financial requirements, students must meet other criteria for a UK visa, including obtaining a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed educational institution, demonstrating English language proficiency (via IELTS or TOEFL), enrolling in the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) for access to the National Health Service, and providing a valid passport or travel document.
Dependents Policy
Under the new system, only students enrolled in postgraduate programs or government-sponsored courses will be permitted to bring dependents, such as spouses or children. Generally, undergraduate students are not allowed to bring dependents with them.This increase in financial requirements aims to ensure that international students are adequately prepared for their studies and living expenses in the UK.
