Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has tasked the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) with assessing the heavy reliance of these industries on skilled worker visas.In a recent communication to the MAC Chair, Cooper emphasised the need to examine why key professions, particularly in information technology, telecommunications, and engineering, are so dependent on foreign recruitment. These fields have consistently been among the top users of work visas.Cooper acknowledged the valuable contributions of international workers but stressed that the current levels of overseas recruitment are unsustainable and indicative of ongoing skill shortages in the UK. She emphasised the importance of managing and controlling the system to ensure it meets the country's needs effectively.
