Changi Airport is a traveler's dream, with more than 280 food and shopping options, a movie theater, and a hotel. Its famous doughnut-shaped steel and glass building features lush gardens and the "Rain Vortex," the highest indoor waterfall in the world.
The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore reports that this technological change has lowered average immigration clearance times from 25 seconds to just 10 seconds, a 60% reduction.
What is the new endeavor?
Changi Airport, which is frequently ranked as one of the best, now allows passport-free entry at all four passenger terminals. Iris biometrics and facial recognition have facilitated speedy immigration clearance for travelers. Residents of Singapore, including citizens, permanent residents, and holders of long-term passes, can now use just their iris and face biometrics to enter the country. However, automated immigration lanes are not available to children younger than six years of age.
What about tourists from other countries?
According to the ICA, foreign visitors to Singapore can now travel with passport-free immigration because their biometric information is captured when they arrive. As a reminder to travelers, the ICA advised them to bring their passports for immigration clearance in their countries of departure. "All foreign visitors will still need to present their passport for immigration clearance upon arrival in Singapore," the ICA said.
How successful is the initiative?
By October 15, only 15 days following the initiative's full implementation, 1.5 million travelers had passed through immigration without presenting a passport, according to a formal statement released by Singapore's ICA on Thursday, October 24. According to ICA's Commander (Airport), Senior Assistant Commissioner Alan Koo, the effort has lowered the average clearance time per traveler by 60%, from 25 seconds to just 10 seconds. “With automated clearance being the norm at our checkpoints, our officers are now redeployed to take on higher-value job roles, such as interviewing and profiling, to safeguard Singapore’s borders,” he said.
Indian visitors to Singapore
According to data issued by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on October 25, the number of Indian visitors to Singapore increased by 13% during the first nine months of 2024, reaching 898,180. India continues to be Singapore's third-largest tourism market, behind China and Indonesia, as the city prepares for its year-end festivities along Orchard Road. Over a million Indian tourists visited Singapore in 2023, an STB spokeswoman told PTI at the Orchard Road Business Association's festive calendar launch.
