This unprecedented figure represents a substantial increase, surpassing the number of undocumented crossings from the Mexico border route since December 2023. The US-Canada border, the longest open border in the world at nearly 9,000 km, has thus become a significant focus for border security.The CBP data indicates a 47% rise in the average monthly encounters involving Indian nationals at the US-Canada border from January to June 2024, reaching 3,733 compared to 2,548 in 2023. This is a dramatic increase from the 282 encounters recorded in 2021.In parallel, the number of Indians seeking asylum in the UK has also risen sharply. Data from the UK Home Office shows a 136% increase in asylum applications from Indian nationals "at port" in 2022 compared to 2021, with numbers continuing to rise in 2023 and 2024.The Indian Consulate in Dubai has noted that many of these asylum seekers are transit passengers en route to Canada. Both the US and the UK have expressed their concerns to Canada, with the US calling for enhanced visa screening and the UK proposing that all Canada-bound Indian travelers obtain transit visas for stopovers.The Consulate General of India in Dubai has advised those affected to apply for Emergency Certificates or short-validity passports and has set up facilitation counters to assist with these applications. The Canadian Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) is currently analyzing the factors behind this increase and exploring ways to improve its visa processes.In response to the growing issue, Canadian officials have acknowledged the need to address the surge in asylum claims and visa abuse.
