EU Ambassador to Kuwait, Anne Koistinen, recently stated that facilitating Schengen visa procedures for Kuwaitis is a top priority. She emphasized that the EU recognizes Kuwait as a trusted partner and is committed to strengthening relations by making travel easier for its citizens. This initiative aligns with broader EU efforts to enhance diplomatic cooperation and economic exchanges with Kuwait.
The European Commission’s Efforts Towards Visa Facilitation
The EU has taken several measures over the past few years to facilitate Schengen visa access for Kuwaiti citizens. In 2022, the European Commission proposed visa-free travel for Kuwaiti nationals holding biometric passports. This proposal would allow Kuwaitis to stay in Schengen countries for up to 90 days within 180 days without requiring a visa. The European Commission justified this proposal by acknowledging Kuwait’s strong diplomatic and economic relations with the EU, as well as the country’s low risk in terms of illegal migration and security concerns.In addition to the visa-free travel proposal, the EU also introduced a more favorable visa regime in 2023 for Kuwaiti citizens applying for Schengen visas. Under this new framework, Kuwaiti nationals are now eligible for long-term, multiple-entry Schengen visas valid for up to five years. These visas significantly reduce the frequency of applications for frequent travelers, thereby simplifying the travel process for business professionals, students, and tourists.
