In a bid to enhance tourism from India and China, South Africa is set to launch a new visa initiative called the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) starting in 2025. This scheme aims to streamline the visa application process and increase the number of Indian tourists visiting the country.The TTOS is designed to address existing barriers in South Africa's tourism sector, which have hindered its potential as a leading global destination. Currently, Indian tourists constitute only 3.9% of South Africa's international visitors. To remedy this, the Department of Home Affairs, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, the Presidency, and Operation Vulindlela, will implement the new scheme to facilitate easier access for travellers from these key markets.Inspired by the success of the Trusted Employer Scheme (TES), which streamlined visa processing for businesses seeking critical skills, the TTOS will simplify the visa process for groups of tourists. Under this initiative, selected tour operators from India and China will be invited to register with the Department of Home Affairs. Approved operators will oversee their groups' travel and visa arrangements, while the Department will fast-track group visa applications for the first time.Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber anticipates that the TTOS will significantly boost tourism, thereby creating job opportunities and stimulating economic growth in South Africa. The dedicated team within the Department will ensure swift processing and resolve past issues that have impeded tourism.This initiative represents a strategic effort to enhance South Africa's appeal as a tourist destination and foster stronger ties with key international markets.
