Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia have solidified their positions as some of the most popular visa-free destinations for Indian travellers, according to new data from the digital travel platform Agoda. Based on accommodation bookings and search trends, these countries, along with Nepal, are ranked in the top five visa-free destinations for Indians in 2024, reflecting the growing demand for hassle-free international travel options. Thailand, in particular, has become the top choice, experiencing a significant increase in accommodation searches following the introduction of a visa waiver for Indian tourists in November 2023. This double-digit surge indicates a strong preference for Thailand’s diverse cultural experiences, scenic beaches, and vibrant city life. Malaysia, which implemented a similar visa waiver in December 2023, has also seen remarkable growth, leaping from the eighth position in 2023 to the fourth spot in the first half of 2024. The introduction of relaxed visa policies by these countries has made them highly attractive for Indian travellers seeking convenient and affordable vacations without the burden of extensive visa procedures. Speaking at a recent event in Delhi, Omri Morgenshtern, CEO of Agoda, underscored the impact of such visa reforms on global tourism. "We know that removing visa restrictions makes a huge difference to inbound tourism, and we see this across the globe," he said, referring to the positive impact on both the host countries and travellers. Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director for India at Agoda, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of hassle-free travel for Indian tourists. "The growing interest among Indian travellers in visa-free destinations underscores a major shift in travel preferences. People are increasingly looking for destinations that offer convenience, accessibility, and a wide variety of experiences without the hassle of long visa processes," he remarked. The report also indicates that these visa-free destinations offer a mix of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and exciting urban environments, which are attracting a broad spectrum of Indian tourists, including families, solo travellers, and young professionals. Thailand’s bustling cities, Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity, Sri Lanka’s serene landscapes, and Indonesia’s exotic islands continue to draw in tourists looking for varied experiences. As visa-free travel becomes increasingly appealing to Indian travellers, it is expected that these destinations will continue to grow in popularity, further boosting their tourism sectors. With more countries potentially easing their visa requirements, international travel for Indians is set to become more seamless, making global exploration easier and more accessible than ever before.
