U.S. Mission in India Conducts Record-Breaking Student Visa Day Interviews
On June 13, 2024, the Consular Team of Mission India hosted its 8th annual Student Visa Day, interviewing a remarkable 3,900 student visa applicants. This event underscores the U.S. Mission's dedication to fostering higher education ties between the United States and India. The robust programming for Student Visa Day featured interactive sessions where Mission members, alongside EducationUSA representatives, provided valuable insights and information on studying in the United States. The initiative highlights the growing educational collaboration and strong commitment of the U.S. Mission to support Indian students pursuing academic opportunities in the U.S.
Student Visa Day as Demand Soars
Ambassador Eric Garcetti extended his warm wishes to Indian students, emphasizing their significant achievements. He remarked, “Each international student on a U.S. campus represents a remarkable journey of study and dedication. Today's Indian students embody immense potential, unlocking new knowledge, skills, and opportunities. As ambassadors for India, you are advancing the U.S.-India relationship with each step forward.”
Minister-Counselor for Consular Affairs Russel Brown also highlighted the importance of the event, noting, “With Indian students set to become the largest group of international students in the U.S., the Department of State and our EducationUSA partners are thrilled to welcome student visa applicants during Student Visa Day and throughout the season.”
The number of Indian students choosing to study in the U.S. has surged dramatically over the past three years. In 2023, the U.S. Mission to India issued more student visas than in the combined years of 2018, 2019, and 2020. This unprecedented increase demonstrates the U.S. Government's commitment to prioritizing student visas and accommodating rising demand, despite a 400 percent increase in overall visa requests between 2021 and 2023.
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India are preparing for continued growth in student visa applications, having extended the 2024 student visa season to address the rising demand. The United States remains the top choice for Indian students seeking higher education, with 69 percent preferring a U.S. education over other destinations. Indian students, who are already the largest group of international graduate students in the U.S., gain valuable experience and often pursue employment-based visas or return as leaders in India, showcasing the enduring benefits of a U.S. education.
