The United Kingdom has announced significant updates to its immigration policies concerning the Skilled Worker visa, with the goal of ensuring fair pay, ethical recruitment, and reducing exploitation—particularly in the care sector. These changes will come into effect from April 9, 2025.
Key Changes to the Skilled Worker Visa:
Priority to Local Sponsorship SeekersUnder the new regulations, care providers in England must first attempt to recruit international care workers who are already living in the UK and seeking new sponsorship. Only after proving unsuccessful attempts to hire locally can they recruit new workers from overseas. This aims to support existing foreign workers within the country and improve employment continuity.
Increase in Minimum Salary ThresholdThe government has raised the minimum salary requirement for Skilled Worker visa holders from £23,200 to £25,000 annually, or from £11.90 to £12.82 per hour, based on a 37.5-hour work week. This update reflects the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and ensures that workers receive appropriate compensation.
Revised Pay Rates for Key SectorsOccupations in health and education—including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and teachers—will also see revised minimum pay rates. These updates will align with national pay scales, reinforcing the value of these essential roles.
Government Measures Against Abuse
These changes build on the government's earlier efforts to prevent abuse of the immigration system. Since July 2022, over 470 sponsor licences in the care sector have been revoked due to violations of immigration and employment laws. More than 39,000 workers have been associated with these sponsors since October 2020.To protect migrant workers further, employers are now strictly prohibited from charging workers for the cost of visa sponsorship. This measure is designed to prevent financial exploitation and reduce debt burdens among care workers.
Reforms to Student Visa Route
In addition to Skilled Worker visa reforms, the government is also introducing tighter regulations for the Short-Term Student visa. Originally intended for English language courses lasting 6 to 11 months, this visa route has raised concerns due to cases of misuse by individuals without genuine academic intentions. The reforms are aimed at maintaining the integrity of the UK's student visa system.These comprehensive updates reflect the UK government's commitment to creating a fairer, more transparent immigration system.
