According to Home Office data, the number of applications for study-related visas to the UK has risen for the first time in over a year. With 28,700 applications, officials report a 13% increase in sponsored study visa applications in January 2025 over the same month in 2024. Additionally, this is a 7% rise from January 2023 levels. The UK has seen a monthly increase in study visa applications year over year for the first time since October 2023. The total figures are still lower than in prior years, though. Following a period of decrease brought on by policy changes implemented in January 2024 that prohibit the majority of overseas students' family members from joining them in the UK, there has been a surge in student visa applications. Only students enrolling in postgraduate research programs are now permitted to have dependents. In January 2024, the Conservative administration led by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak implemented a ban on the majority of student dependents. Universities are worried about the financial implications of the limitation, but the Labour administration, which has been in office since July 2024, has maintained it.

The UK granted 103,995 sponsored study visas to Indian students in the fiscal year that concluded in September 2024. This accounted for 23% of all study visas issued, however it was a 31% decrease from the year before.The policy limiting dependents, which resulted in a 69% decrease in visas granted to student family members during that time, is partly to blame for this dip, according to officials. These new conditions do not apply to applicants from certain countries or students who are currently resident in the UK.
