The data, released on October 10, indicates a stark drop in dependent applications, with only 17,800 submitted during the same period—an alarming 85% decrease compared to the previous year. This policy change, enacted by the former Conservative government under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has raised concerns in the international education sector regarding the future of the Graduate Route.
In response to these challenges, newly appointed Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has assured that international students are valued and welcomed in the UK under the new administration. This has sparked hope for improved relations between the government and the international education sector.
However, university representatives emphasise that additional measures are necessary to rekindle international interest in UK education. Charley Robinson, head of mobility policy at Universities UK International, commented, “While the confirmation that the Graduate Route remains in place and the new government’s welcoming stance towards international students provide some clarity, the data clearly shows that the recruitment landscape is still very challenging.”
Diana Beech, Chief Executive of London Higher, which represents universities in London, expressed concerns about the implications of the drop in visa applications for UK universities facing financial pressures. “Although there has been a slight recovery, the decline is troubling. The UK’s status as a premier study destination is at risk,” she stated. Beech further noted that ongoing restrictions on dependents and negative perceptions surrounding higher education could exacerbate financial difficulties within institutions, particularly those that are essential for promoting social mobility.
The education sector is urging the government to collaborate with universities to foster stable and sustainable growth in international student enrollment, especially in light of declining domestic fees, potential research funding cuts, and rising operational costs.
