This decrease coincides with the introduction of stringent new immigration regulations that have reshaped visa eligibility and requirements for international students, skilled workers, and healthcare professionals.
Key Immigration Policy Changes Impacting International Students
Effective January 1, 2024, international students on most courses are no longer permitted to bring dependents, except for those enrolled in postgraduate research programs or government-funded scholarship courses. This policy shift has deterred many prospective students, contributing to the substantial drop in applications.The UK government also raised the financial threshold for other visa categories, such as Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas. From April 2024, the minimum salary for sponsorship on a Skilled Worker visa increased from £26,200 to £38,700, while the income requirement for sponsoring a spouse or partner visa increased from £18,600 to £29,000.
Impact on Sponsored Study Visa Applications
In the peak period between July and September 2024, there were 49,000 fewer applications from main applicants compared to the previous year, marking a 16% decline. Additionally, applications from student dependents saw an even sharper decrease, with only 17,800 applications recorded between January and September 2024, representing an 85% drop from the previous year.
Effects on Skilled Worker and Healthcare Visas
Changes to Skilled Worker visas have similarly influenced application patterns. While initial application rates spiked to 10,100 in April, they eventually stabilised, dropping to 4,200 by September 2024. From April to September, there were 37,900 applications—up 6% from the same period in 2023. The dependents of skilled workers showed similar trends, with a 14% increase over the same period.For Health and Care Worker visas, application rates have plummeted due to tightened policies. The number of applications fell from a high of 18,300 in August 2023 to just 2,100 by September 2024. Applications from dependents within this route also saw a sharp reduction, with 30,600 applications recorded between April and September 2024—74% fewer than in 2023.These policy adjustments reflect the UK government’s focus on regulating immigration through tighter visa restrictions, affecting not only students but also skilled workers and healthcare professionals.
