This move is aimed at expediting the visa application process and strengthening the ties between the two nations. The announcement, made on September 30, 2024, reflects the ongoing commitment to improving people-to-people connections, as highlighted by US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti.
Garcetti emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden set an ambitious goal to improve and expedite the visa process, and I am proud to say that we have delivered on that promise. Our consular teams at the embassy and four consulates work tirelessly to meet the growing demand."
Surge in Indian Travellers to the US
In 2024, over 1.2 million Indians travelled to the United States, marking a 35% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This surge in travel has led to record numbers of nonimmigrant visa applications from India. For the second consecutive year, the US Mission in India has processed more than one million such applications, underscoring the strength of US-India relations.
The US Embassy also highlighted the success of its student visa program, particularly during the summer visa season. All first-time student visa applicants were able to secure appointments at one of the five consular sections across India. In 2023, the US issued over 140,000 student visas to Indian nationals, the highest number for any country globally, setting a record for the third consecutive year.
Focus on Reducing Visa Wait Times
Since the post-COVID surge in visa applications, the US has made significant efforts to cut down the waiting periods, especially for interview-required visitor visas. In late 2021, wait times for these visas extended up to three years in some cases. However, the current efforts have significantly reduced the waiting period to just over a year for many applicants.
The US Mission in India remains focused on its goal to "bring families together, connect businesses, and facilitate tourism," as stated by the Embassy. Currently, more than six million Indians already hold nonimmigrant visas, and each day, thousands more are issued.
The additional visa slots represent a continued effort by the US government to meet the increasing demand for visas from Indian nationals while fostering stronger diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
