However, experts caution that increased student intake in these nations may not fully compensate for the expected drop in traditional markets.
Impact of Visa Curbs on Indian Students
According to experts, Canada has already reduced study visa approvals by 35% for 2024 and plans an additional 10% cut in 2025. This has sparked concerns about a steep decline in Indian student admissions. Vaibhav Gupta, Chief Marketing Officer at iSchoolConnect, a study abroad platform, estimates that around 125,000 fewer Indian students will travel to Canada, Australia, and the UK. “This shortfall may be partially offset by increased interest in the US and European countries like France, Germany, and Italy,” he noted.
Canada's Stringent Measures and Wider Implications
The Canadian government’s decision to link post-graduation work permits to labour market needs is seen as a positive step by some, but the drastic reduction in study visa approvals is expected to deny around 80,500 Indian students entry in 2024 alone. This could have far-reaching consequences for higher education institutions and student ambitions alike.Adarsh Khandelwal, co-founder of Collegify, warns that another 23,000 Indian aspirants could face rejections next year. "Many students may rethink their choice of study programs, opting for courses that align with labour market demand to improve their chances of securing post-study work permits," said Piyush Kumar, Regional Director for South Asia at IDP Education.
Shift Towards New Destinations
With visa restrictions tightening, students are exploring other viable destinations for higher education. Countries like Germany, France, and Spain have reported a notable uptick in international student applications. Between 2021 and 2023, Spain saw a 28% increase, while Germany experienced a 13% rise. Outside Europe, New Zealand and Dubai have also seen increases of around 10%.Saurabh Arora, CEO of University Living, explains that the shift towards European nations could provide new opportunities for Indian students, although he emphasises that the increased intake may not be sufficient to fully make up for the loss from Canada, Australia, and the UK.
UK and Australia's Policy Changes
The UK has introduced stricter financial requirements for international students. Overseas students are now required to demonstrate higher minimum savings to qualify for a student visa, adding a financial burden on applicants. Additionally, the UK's policy restricting dependents for students, except for research postgraduate programs, is likely to result in a 15-20% drop in postgraduate applications from India, experts say.Australia has also imposed a cap on the number of international students at 270,000 per year starting in 2025, along with stricter visa eligibility criteria. Institutions across the Group of Eight may face significant impacts, making early applications critical for students.The changes in visa policies in Canada, Australia, and the UK are creating a more competitive and selective environment for Indian students. While countries like Germany, France, and Spain offer promising alternatives, they may not completely offset the reduced intake from traditional destinations. It remains crucial for students to carefully evaluate their options and act promptly to secure admission in their preferred universities.
