The US Visa Waiver Programme allows citizens of qualifying countries to enter the United States for business or tourism without needing a visa for up to 90 days. Starting October 1, Qatar will join this program, becoming the second Muslim-majority country to do so.

Qatar’s Inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Programme

On September 25, 2024, it was announced that Qatar met the eligibility requirements to be part of the US Visa Waiver Programme. This means that Qatari citizens can now travel to the United States without obtaining a visa for up to 90 days. The US departments of State and Homeland Security praised Qatar for fulfilling strict security criteria, making it a significant partner in this arrangement.

Understanding the US Visa Waiver Programme

The US Visa Waiver Programme is designed for citizens of countries that meet specific requirements. To qualify, a country must maintain a low visa refusal rate, have minimal instances of visa overstays, and ensure reciprocal treatment for American travellers. This program allows Qatari citizens to visit the US for business or tourism without a visa, although they must still obtain electronic approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

Eligibility for the Programme

Despite Qatar's population of over 3 million, only around 320,000 Qatari citizens are eligible for this program, provided they hold valid passports. Most residents in Qatar are foreign workers who do not qualify for the visa waiver.

Why Qatar Qualified for the Programme

Qatar’s strategic partnership with the United States has strengthened over recent years. It has played a crucial role in various international negotiations, such as talks between Hamas and Israeli officials. The US values Qatar's contributions, particularly during the American withdrawal from Afghanistan and its ongoing efforts to address human rights issues with the Taliban.

Conclusion

The inclusion of Qatar in the US Visa Waiver Programme reflects a deepening strategic partnership between the two nations. This move is expected to enhance travel and commerce between Qatar and the United States, allowing for smoother interactions and opportunities for Qatari citizens. This comprehensive understanding of the US Visa Waiver Programme highlights its significance and the positive implications for Qatar and its citizens.
